Your membership in the MDA places your livelihood in jeopardy because of corruption in the peer review system. You owe it to yourself and your family to learn about the dangers that a corrupt peer review system poses and how it’s being misused in a manner that can restrict your ability to earn a living. In short, it has become a method for the “old boys club” to harass and intimidate those who they dislike. “Dislike?” you might question? Can it really be so juvenile! Well, as improbable as that may sound, it is reality!
Worse yet, if you belong to a minority group, you’re already a target; if you aren’t White Anglo-Saxon Protestant, watch out! And even if you are WASP, you are not safe if you practice cosmetic dentistry, not place amalgam, advertise, are female, have a cerec, use a laser, air abrasion, perform conscious sedation, are successful, or do not send referrals to the right people.
Nationwide, more than half the dentists in a recent survey believe that in the peer review process, “the dentist is assumed guilty; it’s a witch hunt even if you are innocent.”
While the peer review system enjoys legal immunity, that is not true when “someone provided or acted on information they knew to be false or with a reckless disregard for the information’s truth or falsity.” Having served on a peer review committee, I am all too familiar with the politics surrounding this committee and can assure you that it will be impossible to prove the malice that exists. Meaning? That you have no legal recourse or protection!
Why send this letter anonymously? Because I am afraid of these people and you should be too!
If this scares you too, you can do something. Join the many who are not renewing their membership in the dental association. This will eliminate the possibility that the peer review system will affect you. You are like the majority of practitioners: an honest, caring, and hard-working professional, who wants only to provide quality care to your patients, to employ your staff and to support your family. All these decent goals are at risk by an abusive and discriminatory peer review system. Join the many who have chosen to “vote with their money” by not renewing their membership in the MDA.
