Darrell died today due to negligent disregard by Amy Fultz and Linda Brent of Chimp Haven. Darrell was sedated twice in two weeks. He passed out yesterday. There has been no vet at chimp haven since June 2007. The on call vet was called, Dr. Brown. She did not come to look at Darrell stating that because he had been sedated twice in two weeks she did not want to sedate him again to check out his problem. Darrell was sedated to remove a tooth and the second sedation to move him into a new group of NIH chimps. The osu chimp family was broken up this week and moved into groups with other chimps who had been used in medical research which is in direct violation of the contract with the NIH.
Today Amy Fultz and Linda Bernt decided to move more unfamiliar chimps into the group with Darrell, knowing he was not well and woud be caused additional stress. As soon as the chimps were introduced Darrell passed out again. He came too and Amy Fultz called Linda Brent to ask if they should proceed with the introductions. Linda Brent said that Dr. Brown stated that if Darrell was only passing out once per day there was no need to worry. Darrell had never passed out until yesterday this is a new issue. Linda Brent said to move forward with the intorductions. Moments later Darrell passed out again. Kathleen Candido (who is not a vet), was heard saying to give Darrell Diazapam. Moments after recieving the Diazapam Darrell crashed. Care staff who are paid seven times less than Linda Brent were sent to try to revieve Darrell while Linda Brent sat in her office.
Linda Brent began covering her tracks at 4:30. She is annoucing to the press that Darrell had medical issues, that is a lie, he was happy and healthy until she and Amy Fultz decided to disrupt all the osu chimps lives.
At 5:00 Dr. Brown arrived to do an autopsy but She had no time to look at Darrell while he was alive.
This is not the first incident of Amy Fultz and Linda Brent medicating a chimp to death. After laughing in a staff meeting about giving the chimp medication to calm him down he was found dead they used heart trouble as the excuse and will likely say that about Darrell as well.
In a ercent san antonio newspaper article Linda Brent used sedation as an excuse not to return Darrell to PPI and she sedated him twice in two weeks. Now he is dead.
There have been many deaths at Chimp Haven and all are explained away. This is gross mismanagement and neglect. if someone did this to a dog they would be in prison. Linda Brent should not be allowed to get away with this and profit from it. The taxpayers paying her six figure salary should be made aware of what she is doing at chimp haven.
